You Know What Panda's Eat...
Ya, they eat bamboo socks. There's a hole in my eco (bamboo) sock. Obviously I have a panda problem that needs to be addressed.

Dogs! Dogs! Dogs!
There are several dogs in my life right now so it seems very appropriate that I am watching Saturday night Animal Planet programming with shows such as "It's Me or the Dog" and "Dogs 101". Right now I'm watching "Dogs 101: Ugly Dogs". YESSSSS!!! There are all sorts of wrinkles, hairlessness, underbites, dangling tongues, and smushed in faces going on right now. I think it's kind of amazing that my two favorite breeds, English bulldogs and pugs, are featured on this program. Apparently there's an annual Ugly Dog competition, the antithesis of dog shows like the Westminster. Bowie, next year you're gonna be entered.
Fun Fact
Brachycephalic dogs aka dogs with smushed in faces such as pugs, bulldogs, and pekingese suffer from a condition where their eyes pop out of their socket because their skulls are so smushed in. That's pretty gross.

There's Snow in My Compost
Last night I went to bed with snow falling, and woke up to a snow covered morning. I'm not gonna call this a freak snow fall, not by any means, but it stands out against the weather we've been having. I'm starting to sound like a blog for the weather channel. No, it just reminded me of last year around this time when I was down at the Folk School and there was one day of snow. It looked really pretty in the mountains, but was short lived...like today. I don't think it lasted past noon. I would not put snow as the winner of my March Madness bracket.

It's Great in Dayton
I've been going on some driving tours of east Dayton recently and I have to say it's kind of a nice area. Sure, pretty much all of the cool looking buildings are vacant and there's not a whole lotta action going on, but with a little help it could be really cool. That's kind of Dayton's un-official slogan "With a little help, this could be a cool place." Let's hear it for hometown pride.

Proud to be a Midwesterner
It may be the start of March Madness, but it is also the start of corn hole season. The Cartwrights and Heffron-Cartwright kicked off the season with our first game of corn hole yesterday. Apparently mom had the "Toss-of-the-Season", a nothing but net if you will, but no one saw it so she's probably lying. Anyways, I need to condition my corn holin' arm, it's a little sore from yesterday.

PS
how does spell check not recognize "holin'" as a word, weird

Get Your Nerd On
Yeah, so I like to spend my Saturday nights hanging out learning the countries of the world. I was on a mission to learn the capitals of the world, and I still know quite a few, but my new goal is to learn all of the countries of the world and not only that...be able to spell them correctly (Liechtenstein). Thanks to sporcle.com with their timed geography quizzes I am just blustering my way through the world. It's like I'm on a less exciting version of the Amazing Race. So far I have North America (24 countries), South America (12 Countries), Europe (47 countries), and Africa (53 countries) memorized. Next up...Asia. I tried it once and the results were less than stellar. Seriously though, if you have nothing better to do check out sporcle.com it's not just geography, there's all sorts of random stuff to quiz yourself on. Letters of the Greek alphabet for instance and yes, for those of you who spent any time in the Ford complex at Berry there is a category made just for you...Disney Princesses.

Update
While I still plan on growing my hair out, no more spontaneous mohawks, I did have to trim the beast back. It was getting out of control. So, that issue is now dealt with.
New haircut for the new season. Looks like the next thing on the list is some deep cleaning. Spring is the season for cleaning, among other things.

Life's Tough Decisions
I really want to grow my hair out, but it's starting to look pretty awkward and mullety right now. Do I fight through the pain or end it all by cutting my hair? Right now I'm not gonna cut my hair, we'll see how long I can go before it starts getting to be too awkward.

One Year Ago Today....
Happy Blog-O-Versary!!!! To you? To me!! Yes, it was one year ago today that I created this little gem of a blog. It was also the day before I left for the John C. Campbell Folk School, I believe I created the blog to document my travels and adventures at the Folk School. And I am using it to document my travels and adventures in life. Come celebrate this monumental day at the Tim Horton's on 48 and Whipp. You can meet the creator of the blog, enjoy a delicious pastry or coffee beverage, or just pretend you are in Canada. All are fun options.

For the Glory
When one wins something there tends to be prizes involved. Sometimes it's a gold medal, sometimes it's personal satisfaction, sometimes it's ridiculous...Last month, you may remember, team Springbok took first in the WYSO trivia night. Well, our victory did not go unacknowledged. For our efforts we were awarded the tools with which to facilitate a drinking game. That's right, some large foam dice that have commands on them like "Drink Two Beers" "On One Leg", or "Drink Two Shots" "In 20 Seconds". YES!!! I know what's gonna happen on 17 March. Let the games begin.

Spring(bok)
So, it's looking like spring is right around the corner. I love the snow, and I love winter, and all the cold and grey, but I'm also pretty excited about springtime. I just wish that Dayton had some nice mountains or even hills to enjoy in this warmer weather. All seasons are better in the mountains. Instead there is muddy flat. But, this is not a time of negative thinking. I am going to enjoy what Dayton has to offer...for now.

This One Goes Out to Steve
So, last month I posted about the WYSO trivia night and how the Cartwrights and Heffron-Cartwright participated as team Springbok and we came in second. Well, last Thursday on 25 February we participated in the WYSO trivia night again. The theme this month was Irishnessocity in anticipation of St. Patrick's Day. There were also some non-Irish questions. Our team was doing well, and was able to get some calls in and answer questions even though the phone lines were busy. We did well enough that we made it to the second, more exclusive round where the top four teams from round one compete against each other. It's the elite vs. the elite, but there can only be one winner!!! And yeah, we pretty much kicked some A and won the whole trivia night. Go Team Springbok! For our prize, they will mail us a shamrock shake. Next trivia night will be on 25 March.
ps
If anyone cares Steve (who is now apparently my blog manager) wants you to know that the South African soccer team are called the Springboks. Is there a name for the US national team?
